Faith woke lazily the next morning, stretching out a few random aches from last night’s lovemaking with Myles. He’d always been an athlete, and he still was insanely fit. Which meant he’d exhausted her thoroughly.

Speaking of which, she glanced over at the bedside clock and gasped in alarm. It was nearly ten a.m. Jackson!

She bolted out of bed and ran for the bathroom, but stopped cold when she saw the note taped to the bathroom mirror. Jack and I got up early and went out for a guys-only breakfast. Your mom agreed to watch him this morning so you could sleep in. Oh, and I forgot to tell you. Your new car was delivered while we were on vacation. It’s in the garage. Keys are on a hook by the back door.

Wow. Myles was pulling out all the stops to be a great husband, these days. She could get used to this. She took a leisurely shower, dried her hair, and dressed. She headed out to the detached garage and squealed in delight at the brand-new minivan parked inside. It was the same color as her last one—a dark, cherry red—with even more safety features and gadgets. She spent nearly a half hour just sitting in it, familiarizing herself with the various features. When she was satisfied she knew her way around the vehicle, she drove it out of the garage.

As she backed out of the driveway, she noticed a man lounging across the street. He was youngish, fair and lean, but that was about all she caught as she accelerated away from the house. Must be one of Hank’s men keeping an eye on her and the house.

Inspired by all the great changes happening in their lives, she decided to drive over to North Hills Academy for Gifted and Talented Children. The receptionist was helpful and friendly, and gave her both an application for Jack to attend the school and an application for her to teach there. Excited at the prospect of both, she headed over to her mom’s house.

It was a beautiful, sunny day, the last gasp of Indian summer before the dreary months of winter set in, and she took the opportunity to drive Jack over to their favorite park. While he ran around like a maniac with the other kids, she looked over the job application.

It was pretty straightforward, and she made mental notes of the materials she would need to collect to accompany it. Résumé, performance reviews from her last school, letters of recommendation from principals at various schools she’d substitute taught at recently, an example curriculum and teaching modules. She would send them science and math modules, not only because they were particularly strong subjects for her, but also because schools were desperate to provide top-notch STEM instruction these days.

The other kids started to drift home toward lunch, and she looked up from the paperwork in search of Jack. That was when she noticed the lean man lurking a little ways from the playground, watching the kids crawling on the equipment.
